Living with Nature
Out and about…..with your four legged friend.
Visit the old limestone mining kilns just a stones throw from the cabin or travel further afield to explore some of the many attractions – Low Bollihope Cabin is situated between two historic market towns -Stanhope and Wolsingham which are only a few miles away in each direction. The small village of Frosterley is just over a mile away and has a Lakes & Dales shop and post office, a fish & chip shop and a village pub. Weardale leads into Northumberland by travelling past Stanhope and going up over the fells where you will find delightfull tiny hamlets and historic villages. The ‘Lord Crewe Arms’ in Blanchland (30 mins drive) offers real fires, a huge beer garden and excellent food and is dog friendly. The Durham Dales Centre has a fine selection of artisan shops and a lovely dog friendly cafe. The ancient town of Barnard Castle has lots of unique shops and cafes and a highly recommended fish & chip shop – No: 149 (for great reviews visit TripAdvisor(.
Bowes Museum
Bowes museum is a stones throw from Barnard Castle and is a fabulous place to visit – with it’s own cafe and gift shop, perfect for the wetter weather, you can walk your dog in the extensive grounds. Driving from Bowes to the A66 you can reach Mainsgill Farm Shop which has a fabulous selection of freshly produced products and a cafe, (dogs are allowed outside in the seating area).
Slayley Hall Hotel is approx. 45 mins drive away and is dog friendly and provides food, coffee and drinks in it’s sumptuous lounges. You can book a Spa Day in the health club or play a round of golf there (if you don’t have a four legged friend with you!)
Hadrians Wall – just over an hours drive from the cabin – sadly the site of the destroyed Sycamore Gap tree – or Robin Hood tree – made famous when it appeared in the 1991 film ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’ it was one of the most photograped trees in the country and stood in a dramatic dip in Hadrians wall in the Northumberland National Park. Sadly someone destroyed the tree in late September 2023 by cutting it down. The nearest town to the wall is Haltwhistle which is only 2 miles away from the ‘Hadrian Wall World Heritage Site’ and the ‘Northumberland National Park’.
Durham City with it’s beautiful Cathedral and Castle is 18 miles away (approx. 30 mins drive) not ideal for dogs unfortunately, but lots of cafes – eating places and cinema.
Olde World Charm
Don’t be surprised to find lot’s of grazing sheep – Pheasants and wildlife on your way to the cabin. Look out for Lamas, goats and sheep grazing in the paddock belonging to the farmhouse on the way to the cabin down the track.
